Just as the chicken wing has its day in the sun, with The Chicken Wing Festival, so too shall sponge candy sparkle in the national eye. Mayor Brown has announced that for the first time ever, a day is being dedicated to Buffalo’s tastiest of treats – sponge candy.
Moving forward, September 21 is National Sponge Candy Day. The annual celebration was concocted by the creative team surrounding Fowler’s Chocolate, a Buffalo company that was founded in 1910. Fowler’s is also the company that claims to be the originator of the treat, since they have been making it the longest.
Regardless of who has been making it the longest, or who makes it best, sponge candy is now synonymous with Buffalo, and has been aptly awarded a national day of honor. No matter where you get your sponge candy from, the important thing is that you have a stash of it somewhere at the office or at home come Monday. Long live sponge candy – a delicious Buffalo tradition that continues to gain in popularity.
