Living in Buffalo has its advantages, especially when it comes to utilizing a natural resource that is forever on our doorstep. For years, Lake Erie was considered a playing ground for the elite, as it was mostly unapproachable to those who didn’t have access to a boat. These days, everyone has a chance to participate in water-related activities, from paddle boating on the East Canal to taking The Buffalo Bike Ferry to the Outer Harbor and back.
Sailing has also become more approachable as of late. There are a number of charitable arms to Buffalo’s sailing organizations. The Buffalo Yacht Club is also looking to get young people out onto the water, whether they have experience or not. The Buffalo Yacht Club Foundation’s Scholastic Sailing program is designed to attract high school and college students who might not have access to a boat, and who are looking to partake in a fall sailing program – scholarships are available. According to the Yacht Club, “High school and collegiate sailors and those wanting to learn to sail, are welcome. Open enrollment continues through September 18. The Back to School Regatta is this Saturday, September 19th from 11am-3pm.”
Now that school is back in session, it’s time for students to consider what they want to do during their downtime. For some, the thrill of sailing is the perfect way to get their bearings. This is an excellent opportunity to discover another aspect of the waterfront, while meeting a few friends along the way.
