We’ve probably all seen them before, but until now I never thought of referring to them as ‘Telescope Houses“. No, I’m not talking about some sort of super modern, expandable micro-dwellings, rather they are houses indigenous mainly to the East Side of Buffalo, where homeowners have built addition after addition over the years. With a couple of add-ons (kitchen, bedroom, etc.), the house begins to take on the appearance of a telescope, thus the term Telescope Houses.
Photographer and sociologist David Schalliol has paid a visit to Buffalo numerous times to photograph this city’s architecture. Now, a dedicated segment of his work is featured in ArchDaily.com – Schalliol has compiled a series of images, along with writings, that pay homage to these unusual houses.
