By this time, we should all be aware that the world’s bat population is diminishing due to disease, habitat destruction and a general misunderstanding of this fabulous creature. Bats should not be looked at as scary, no matter how many Dracula films you watch. They are an integral part of the natural ecosystem – bats help us by eating pesky insects such as mosquitoes.
On Saturday August 22, 2015, Tifft Nature Preserve will be hosting its annual Creatures of the NIGHT event. Knowing that so many of us are disconnected from nature, especially during the nighttime, Tifft offers us an unusual insight into nature’s nighttime activities. What are the sounds that you hear during the night? The chirps? The squeaks? The screeches? It’s time to find out, firsthand, as guides lead you through the 264 acre preserve, under the cover of night.
The adventure will be led by Ecology and Environment, Inc. biologists, and entomologist Wayne Gall. The team will be conducting a bat survey during the outing, for all to enjoy. Learn about the moths and other creatures that inhabit the woods, as you walk through the Tifft trails, led by your host guides.
Two hikes will be offered to nature lovers – one shorter walk for families with kids, and a longer hike for the adults.
