The Buffalo Blondes vs. Brunettes (BvB) flag football league is busting a move for the city. For the first time, their games will be held at Nichols School, starting this fall. Momentum for the league is not only growing in Buffalo, but around the country, as teams rally together to tackle the debilitating disease, Alzheimer’s.
Moving forward Buffalo BvB is also planning on expanding its reach outside of Buffalo, and anticipates on playing its first regional game against Saratoga next year. If the event pans out, it will be held in Buffalo, at Nichols School (the team’s new home starting in 2105). The game would also open up additional doors, for the Buffalo players to take on more teams in a regional bracket.
This year, the season’s Game Day (Sunday, August 23, 2015) will be dedicated to the memory of Coach Charlie Dingboom, a renowned athletic figurehead who coached for 61 seasons at schools throughout the city (including Nichols).
A commemorative BvB jersey will be handed to Dingboom’s wife at the ceremony. The game will also feature food trucks, a half time football kick-off competition for spectators, and an after party at Iron Works.
This year marks the 7th annual season for Buffalo BvB. Throughout the year, players scramble to fundraise in preparation for the yearly Bachelorette Auction, which is essentially an event where supporters win great prizes scavenged by the players (who are not actually auctioned off at the event).
The “A Date to Remember” auction (silent, live and Chinese) is scheduled for Friday, August 14, 2015 at the Adam’s Mark Hotel. It’s a classy event that makes big money for the team.
“This league is about empowering women,” says team co-chair Deanna Bednarz. “The players are not powderpuffs – they are fit, strong players. There’s nothing powderpuff about this team. They bust their asses on and off the field, banging their heads, scrapes, bruises… there’s an ambulance at every game. It’s for real! For the first time, we’re all working together – for a while there was some animosity between the two teams. Now our practices are combined – our goal is to get stronger and better by helping one another. That will be crucial when we take on other cities. We also have support from The City. We’re excited to be playing in Buffalo – we’re a Buffalo team – and we hope that more fans will come to see us play.”
