RiverWorks opened to the public yesterday. Although there is still some construction underway, the vast majority of the restaurant venue is open and ready to enjoy. Visitors can now grab a seat on dual level patios that overlook the Buffalo River, or inside overlooking the roller derby rink.
At this stage, RiverWorks is not operating at full capacity, but the decision was made to open the doors and let the winds blow where they may. So far, there is a concession stand open (The GLF Grill), which is serving up some staple food items. The Ward restaurant is scheduled to open in approximately two months. A full service bar is open currently. I spoke to one of the bar managers by the name of Marc Vitagliano, who was excited to “get things going” at RiverWorks. He told me that guests are welcome to come grab a drink and explore the complex, even though there is still some work to be done.
And that’s exactly what a few of us did yesterday. We enjoyed a beer on the upper deck and watched the river traffic pass us by (kayaks and puttering speedboats). In all directions along the river, there was work underway – from RiverFest Park to Ellicott Development’s mixed use project.
I would imagine that every visit to RiverWorks, from this point forward, will bring surprises. Whether it’s a freshly opened bar, or an extended patio or dock (first 150′ installed, and another 150′ on the way) – knowing the drivers behind the operation, there’s a lot to look forward too.
I believe that they also boast the biggest “Big Ass Fan” in the city (looks like it’s bigger than the one in Mac’s on Hertel).
Additional RiverWorks phases will bring added fun to the Middle Harbor. Whether it’s bubble soccer or lacrosse (both happening this summer), or an exciting Queen City Roller Derby bout, things are heating up in and around the city’s newest party destination.
