In order to get Buffalonians in better shape, the Wellness Institute’s has launched a “15 Million+ Steps” in 2015 Physical Activity Promotion Campaign. The campaign promotes one of the simplest ways to get in better shape – walking. The goal is to create a number of organized walks throughout the city, by aligning with organizations to fulfill various walking goals that will contribute to the aggressive campaign. Groups participating in the campaign include Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC) and Explore Buffalo.
“The steps from the Explore Buffalo Walks, the 16 BeActive Erie County Park and Mall Walks, the Rapha Family Medicine Summer Walk, the Erie County Downtown Walk at Lunch walk, and the 19 BNMC Wellness on Wednesday WOW Walk series, put the 2014 total steps over the ten million mark and inspired us to set the 2015 community steps goal at 15 million+,” said Phil Haberstro of the Wellness Institute.
As a leader in the movement to get people walking, the BNMC is launching its Walking on Wednesdays (WOW) at Kaminski Park, starting Wednesday May 20 (corner of Carlton and Elm Streets – Roswell Park Institute). The half-hour walk will take participants on a 1.5 mile journey that is intended to burn approximately 150 calories. The walk takes place during lunchtime, so participants can eat a healthy breakfast, get to work, and then get moving between 12:10pm to 12:40pm (rain or shine).
