On 4-20, Buffalo Marijuana Movement (BMM) organized a rally to promote the Buffalo Marijuana Act. The rally took place in front of City Hall.
According to BMM, local arrest records show that people are being arrested for possession of under 25 grams, when the offense should be considered a violation. Compounding the issue is that 80% of the arrests are African American. BMM believes that these unwarranted arrests (20% of the overall arrests in Erie County) cost the taxpayers a lot of money, and unnecessarily divert attention from the real crime issues at hand.
BMM is looking forward to the day when hemp will be a significant manufacturing resource in Western New York – hemp fabrics, fibers fuels and plastics. Instead of importing the hemp and hemp products into the US, communities such as Buffalo could benefit from the creation of green products and jobs. The group also feels that with the passing of the Compassionate Care Act, the next direct course of action is to speed up the implementation of the medical marijuana program.
