I know that we’re all ready to think about spring and put winter behind us. But before we do, there’s an interesting article published by Project for Public Spaces that touts the benefits of living in cold climate cities. Did you know that people who live in cold climate cities are generally happier? The cities that take advantage of their cold climates generate tight-knit communities. But in order to keep the residents happy, there must be things to do indoors and outdoors, such as festivals, activities, markets… even proper lighting is a consideration.
Buffalo will become a great winter city, there is no doubt. For years we were living in the dark ages, but the times are changing. Yes, this winter was long and cold. That’s all the more reason that we must work harder to create a winter wonderland when the cold weather returns. From shoveling the walks, to snow plowing issues, there is work to be done for sure. But instead of running from the cold, we must learn to embrace it. We’ve begun to reexamine the way we connect with our waterfront during the warmer months. We must do the same in the colder months – create snow-friendly destinations.
Bring on the public markets, heated sidewalks, sledding hills and festivals!
