Eggs aren’t just for scrambling and eating. While many adults are well aware of this, I betcha that there are a lot of kids that don’t realize the incredible nature of the egg, as it relates to nature and reproduction. It’s a lot more common for a kid to see an egg on a McDonald’s breakfast sandwich than to see an intact egg in the wild. A lot of kids might even grow up without ever seeing an egg in the wild, only in cartons on racks at the grocery store.
If you’re on the same page as I am, and you want to get your kids out into nature, to learn about wild animals and their eggs, you should plan a cross-city trip to Tifft Nature Preserve. On April 3, 2015, Tifft will be hosting the annual Spring EGG-stravaganza celebration from 10am to 4pm (timed entry at 10am, 12pm & 2pm).
Don’t miss out on all of the activities, crafts, tours, and live animal demonstrations that include:
- Natural egg dying using berries, spices and vegetables (bring up to six of your own hard boiled eggs)
- Live bird encounters with Messinger Woods Wildlife Care and Education Center, Inc.
- Make ‘n’ take nature-themed crafts including the deliciously popular edible chocolate bird nests
- Guided “Who’s Hatching Hikes” on Tifft’s beautiful and accessible nature trails
- Up-close encounters with live egg-laying animals like bugs, frogs, turtles, and snakes
- Exhibits of real bird eggs, nests, museum specimens, and more
- Newly hatched live chicks and live chicks hatching from eggs (if the timing’s right!)
In 2014 a whopping total of 600 visitors made it out to the nature preserve at the Outer Harbor to learn about the egg-laying critters. Fortunately Tifft now has a newly expanded Visitor Center, in order to accommodate the growing number of nature enthusiasts. In order to ensure that your family gets in, make a reservation by calling 716-825-6397 or visiting www.sciencebuff.org for more information.
Admission to the event is $7 per person and Buffalo Museum of Science Members Save 10%. Pre-registration and pre-payment is required.
Refreshments will be available for sale, including popcorn, snacks, delicacies by the Cheesy Chick Food Truck, and more.
Additional spring and Earth Day themed programs will take place throughout the month of April. For further information, please call Tifft Nature Preserve at 716-825-6397 or visit www.sciencebuff.org.
