Every third Wednesday during the months of February-April, 2015, Squeaky Wheel Film & Media Arts Center will be hosting “an art-house film series of strange and unearthly delights” in its new microcinema inside the Market Arcade. This is a big deal for obscure art-house cinema buffs, and it’s also a big deal for Squeaky Wheel. The new microcinema allows the film and media arts center to showcase these types of film series in a professional setting that is readily accessible by the public.
On Wednesday, February 18, 2015, Squeaky Wheel will be hosting its inaugural screening, featuring La Antena (Dir. Esteban Sapir, Argentina, 2007). The film is part of the Kaleiodotropes Film Series, which is curated by Jake Mikler of Little Red Booking.
“The 90-minute experience of La Antena is set in a futuristic city where the residents have lost their voices to both the omnipotent Mr. TV and the nameless corporation that runs the metropolis. “Assured and imaginative, Sapir has the same comic lightness of touch and imaginative brilliance as Tim Burton, with Leo Sujatovich’s superb score underlining every moment perfectly.” – Squeaky Wheel
The setting for this sort of screening is perfect for the medium. The dark, micro setting creates a viewing atmosphere that lends to these obscure movies in ways that large cinemas could never pull off.
Until now, the vast majority of Buffalonians were not even aware that there was a micro-cinema within the Market Arcade Complex (and I’m not talking about the large screens of the movie theater). It’s a new day for Squeaky Wheel, and the host complex that has made the “partnership” possible.
The Market Arcade Complex is becoming more of an art-house unto itself, with the addition of residents such as Squeaky Wheel and Music is Art, along with other art-based organizations that already inhabit the building.
Now is you chance to witness this newfound experience firsthand.
*Doors for the screenings will open at 6:30pm, and the screening will start promptly at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 for the General Admission and Free for members, unless otherwise noted.
