Who is Chuckie Campbell? One might not expect such a simple question to be such a loaded one. The current Buffaloanian is an American musician, poet, fiction writer, editor, publisher, and educator. He holds a Ph.D. in English Literature and Creative Writing from University of Southern Mississippi and is a full-time professor at Bryant & Stratton College. In addition to his academic achievements, he was the winner of the 2014 ALL WNY Music Awards for “Best Hip Hop/Rap Performer” and “Best New Artist,” and he is the founder and editor of Sunsets and Silencers, a print journal for art, literature, and culture.
On March 17, 2015, Chuckie Campbell and the Phaction (a band consisting of drummer, bass, trumpet and trombone) will perform at the South by South West Music, Film, and Interactive Festival (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. SXSW is the largest of its kind in the world, with more than 2,200 official performers and many unofficial performers in the city of Austin. SXSW features established and independent artists of all musical styles from the US and several other countries.
For years, people have known that SXSW is an amazing opportunity for artists to showcase their talent amongst the biggest music business leaders, journalists and others in the music industry. Campbell will grace the stage alongside some of hip-hop’s great legends, bringing the spirit of Buffalo, NY with him as he performs songs from his most recent release, More Die of Heartbreak, an album that received 5 star reviews, positive press, and critical claim from national outlets such as the Huffington Post, Young Hollywood, and the legendary hip hop publication, The Source. Notably, the album features a number of established and up-and-coming acts, such as Cappadonna (official member) and Solomon Childs (affiliate) of the Wu Tang Clan, Block McCloud of Disturbia Music Group, Cole Jonique of Tate Music Group, and the Rock/Country brother/sister duo out of Nashville, TN, The Breedings.
With such highlights, it’s no wonder this group will be hitting the road for such a prestigious event, but it doesn’t end there. On their descent south to SXSW, Chuckie Campbell and the Phaction will make some exciting stops. Their tour – appropriately titled The Southern Hashtags Tour – will visit Dayton, OH; Richmond, KY; Little Rock, AR; and Houston, TX, before arriving in Austin, TX for SXSW.
Recently, Campbell was added to the booking roster of local hip-hop label Deep Thinka Records and received accolades in the academic world for exceptional creative writing, including the Distinguished Faculty Award for Full-Time Faculty, honoring teachers at Bryant & Stratton College for instructional excellence.
