In January, a handful of local yoga studios are offering basic workshops to entice people to leave their houses and participate in the art of getting healthy. An activity such as yoga can be intimidating to those who have never tried it, especially since there are plenty of hardcore yogis out there who look like they are made of rubber bands when they are in the zone. “I know yoga can be intimidating, but with all of the intro specials on pricing and the foundational/intro workshops going on, now really is a good time to honor the New Year’s resolutions and give it a try,” said Evolution Yoga instructor Molly Muffoletto. “For those who have a hard time justifying the cost, most studios have designated free open classes (or pay what you can), raise money for community classes, and donate time and money back to underserved areas.”
The yoga community in Buffalo is strong. No matter where you live, chances are that there is a yoga studio within a short walk from your house. Yoga is not a passing fad, rather it is a way of life for the enthusiasts who have embraced it. “Yoga classes are packed all over the city,” Molly told me. “I think it is more than just a trend at this point and it has become big business in the area. Every yoga studio is locally owned, and they all know and really support each other.”
As with many other healthy, activity based workshops, the premise behind foundational yoga or vinyasa is to expose the culture to those who have wavered in the past, but have not taken the plunge. That is why January is such a good time to enact upon New Year resolutions, instead of waiting for someone to physically pull you off the couch to try something new. According to Molly, “We are doing a ‘basics’ workshop at Evolation yoga in January and so is East Meets West Yoga, and possibly even other studios around the city.”
Now it’s time to meet your maker – the instructor that will remake your body, spirit and soul into a re-energized, healthy and motivated being.
Do your research. Find the right place for you. Ask your yogi friends for advice. Even try a few places out, to see exactly what is right for you.
If you need a place to start, here is one class that will get you headed in the right direction.
