Can you imagine if the world was made of plush? You know, plush characters, and walls, and cars, and food? If it was up to artist Tommy Nguyen, the world would be made of plush forms of all shapes, sizes and colors. Actually, during an upcoming exhibit at Buffalo Arts Studio in the Tri-Main Building, Nguyen will be converting the Joanna Angie Gallery into a space filled with plush creatures and designs. Part wearable sculpture and part plush padded room, “Me PLUSH You Long Time” is a voyage into the imagination of Nguyen, who has created interactive outfits for “play guests” who are willing to leave their regular lives behind, if just for a moment. To add interest to the plush environment, Nguyen will be enlisting the help of Suicidal Saucies (Queen City Roll Girls’ roller derby team) and also Atsuko Nishida-Mitchell who will prepare a special tea ceremony.
Adding to the plush scene is the work of artist Dennis Barraclough (New Works), whose work will intensify the exhibit with the addition of works focused on “color, light and space”. “I responded in a completely intuitive way aesthetically, responding to color or surface, where it may have lead, nothing beyond that,” says Barraclough. “During the process the piece became more complex, thus leading to further investigation. To say anything more than this would seem superficial, this was my process, the way I worked.”
