The National Trust for Historic Preservation invites you to a special event at Kleinhans Music Hall, this Tuesday, January 27 from 10:00am to 11:00am. The event has been organized to present a special announcement with regard to the campaign to save the historic Chautauqua Amphitheater from destruction. Here is the text from the National Trust invitation:
For over a century, the Chautauqua Amphitheater has been a forum for American culture and the “beating heart” of one of our country’s most iconic communities. Franklin D. Roosevelt, Susan B. Anthony, Ella Fitzgerald, Amelia Earhart, and Booker T. Washington have all walked its boards, as have generations of philosophers, spiritual leaders, and school children. It is a place where history is alive. Unfortunately, its future is at risk.
While the Chautauqua Institution recently announced their intention to delay plans to demolish the Amphitheater to make way for a replica, their decision does not guarantee the building will be saved once this waiting period is over. The time is now for an open, preservation-focused process befitting of this irreplaceable structure.
Please join the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Preservation Buffalo Niagara, and the Preservation League of New York State on Tuesday, January 27, for an important announcement about the campaign to save this National Historic Landmark from demolition. Scheduled speakers for the announcement include:
Stephanie Meeks, President, National Trust for Historic Preservation
Peter Flynn, Co-Chairman of the Board, Preservation Buffalo Niagara
Jay DiLorenzo, President, Preservation League of New York State
The event is free to the public but they ask that you make an advanced reservation. You can do that at this link.
