Chateau Buffalo Urban Winery has come out with a small batch release of a seasonal wine that is bound to get people talking around the holiday dinner table. The “perfectly aged” concoction is a black currant dessert wine that was made with ingredients harvested right in the city of Buffalo. I asked the owner/operator of Chateau Buffalo, Carl Schmitter, about the interesting connections that were made in order for the product to be bottled and released.
“I met Mark and Janice Stevens from the Wilson Street Urban Farm at the Broadway Market,” Carl told me. “As they were tasting wine at our kiosk, I expressed my interest in sourcing local fruit for new flavors. They grow a small amount black currant fruit for jam and had some extra, so they offered them to me. I made 2 gallons of dessert wine from the fruit. We also use elderberries from their farm. The elderberries are now fermenting and aging for a future bottling. I’ve got only 10 black currant bottles left (out of 24 produced). They’re available only at the winery at Niagara Frontier Food Terminal.”
How cool is that? An urban winery hooking up with an urban farm to produce a limited amount of craft dessert wine… now that’s kinda special, don’t you think? The rich and sweet dessert wine can be served on its own or as a cocktail mixer.
