Most of us rely on desktop calendars throughout the year. And by desktop calendars, I mean the ones on our laptops. But there are still plenty of people who rely on the good old fashioned paper calendars that can be written on and given out as gifts.
For years, Brian Gavigan has been publishing the Discover Buffalo Niagara Calendar, which features incredible images of Buffalo. It’s a practical gift for those who like to jot down meetings, birthdays, reminders and event with a pen or pencil. I asked Brian what inspired him to publish these “cool” calendars and this is what he had to say:
“Basically, I publish calendars, really good ones. It’s hard to put “cool” and “calendars” in the same sentence but that’s what we try to achieved with our titles, both locally and nationally.
“15 years ago when we started the Discover Buffalo Niagara Calendar, the idea was to change the negative perception toward the city, and as we all know, perception is everything, or at least carries weight, but reality is more important. We were out to change that perception everyday of the year, and get people to be aware of the many assets, activities and historical facts surrounding this great city.
“We needed to relearn who we were. We promoted not only the beauty of our seasons, architecture and parks, but the incredible amounts of festivals and events, little known facts, inspirational quotes from notable Buffalonians and so much more.
“Since then, I think people finally get it. Buffalo is in a new era, has a new vibe, a resurgence of positive energy and growth that hasn’t been seen in generations. The conversation is no longer about Buffalo’s history, but about using our history as a means of restoring our past and building a future. That, coupled with the creative and artistic minds of Buffalo, we are renewed, reborn, and restored.
“Hence Buffalo 716. This calendar not only shows our world-class architecture in a modern and contemporary way, but fuses our recent successes along with it. If the dynamic photographs depicted in Buffalo 716 weren’t enough, we incorporated innovative printing techniques to enhance the depth, class and overall brilliance to each image by spot varnishing different layers of the image with three different inks.
“We knew the direction we wanted to go with it, but hadn’t seen it done before, or had examples to help pave a path, so we were flying blind with both the implementation and final effects. It wasn’t until we saw our first pre production proof that we could finally see that we were on the right track.
“After a couple weeks of fine tuning, we couldn’t be happier with our new and matured Buffalo Calendar, Buffalo 716. For us, it’s no longer only about changing minds and perceptions, it’s about staying consistent with the current growth, current perceptions, and current innovations taking place. We believe our calendars have a job to do, and it is our responsibility to reflect a brand in the best way possible. Our Buffalo calendars mirror who we are, and right now Buffalo 716 is our latest tribute to it.”
