It is said that photographer Jane Hammond has a knack for creating a dual reality with her images. That’s because the artist manipulates found vintage imagery, and then pieces the clippings back together to create poignant autobiographical content that speaks to the viewer. By printing the final works, so that they appear to be complete and undisturbed images, Hammond is able to recreate and retell stories that can be seen as humorous, troublesome, and completely surreal and out of context. Unless the context is that of her own artistic mind.
A trick of the eye. A complex, yet seamless narrative. A painstaking work of art that puts the manipulation of a collage on a pedestal. There is a real depth to these works, that only this sort of handiwork can produce.
Hammond’s works have been exhibited worldwide, including the Albright Knox Art Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Albertina, Vienna; among others.
The artist will be present on Saturday September 20th at 2:30 pm to talk about her work.
The exhibition is free and open to the public. The gallery is open Tuesday thru Fridays, 10am to 5 pm, Saturday and Monday by appointment.
