It’s hard to comprehend that people actually throw away clothing. In fact, stats show that the average person throws away 70 pounds of clothing each year. That’s unacceptable, especially when it’s so easy to donate unwanted clothing to places that can then distribute the goods.
This past May, The Western New York Coalition for Donated Goods (WNYCDG) was formed in order to tackle many of the recycling problems that we face. The coalition is determined to start changing people’s minds and attitudes towards recycling, by making it easier for people to donate their unwanted clothing and other goods.
The City of Buffalo helped to orchestrate the formation of WNYCDG, which is comprised of Goodwill, Salvation Army, Buffalo City Mission, AMVETS and Hearts for the Homeless. Together, this collaboration is out to help the community and the environment. You can learn more about this cause, by visiting www.city-buffalo.com/reuse.
On August 26, 2014, people are encouraged to bring their unwanted clothing to Niagara Square for a massive collection drive. The event takes place from 12pm-3:30pm. Another drive is taking place in Cheektowaga from August 27-29 (see below for details).
