A mural in Allentown is getting a bit of a makeover. Located on the side of a building that hosts the Autism Services Education Program (leased from the Elmwood Village Charter School), artist Sonya “Sunray” Manning is taking a piece out of the Isaiah Zagar handbook with her loose (but sparkly) interpretation of the sunburst found in City Hall’s council chamber.
“The sunburst is actually taken from some of the artwork created by our artists with autism from Autism Services,” Manning told me. “One of our folks did create a piece of art of the sunburst window from City Hall and this is what I used for my reference. I actually chose a couple pieces of our artists’ art work to use as references.”
Manning is in the process of adding paint and mylar to the existing piece that was created years ago. The mylar adds an eye-catching element to the work… it’s not often that we see non-traditional materials such as this incorporated into a mural (at least around here). I can think of a giant blue wall at the corner of Main Street and Delavan (Canisius College) where this sort of artwork would be most welcome!
no longer the Elmwood Village Charter School. It is now the . We lease it from EVCS.
Also, I just felt is was important that you knew what inspired Sonya to do the beautiful work she did.
