A couple of East Side advocates have been featured in the LA Times. Mike Puma and David Torke are making waves on the other side of the country by touting Buffalo’s Urban Homestead program.
The program allows potential buyers who have the means to fix up “at risk” houses within Urban Renewal Areas (URA’s) and Comprehensive Code Enforcement Areas (CCE’s), to pick them up a for as little as a dollar (see here). And what better way can a single dollar be spent? After all, it costs The City $15000 every time it demolishes a house. And according to Puma, these century-old structures still have plenty of bones and character to warrant an investment from people who can see past the blight and are willing to secure an opportunity and dig into a community.
