The Birdair canopies have been installed at the Outer Harbor near Gallagher Beach. The observation deck project that extends out over the water at the foot of Tifft Street is now complete, awaiting visitors who might be looking for a different vantage point onto the water.
The architecturally sleek looking pier incorporates rugged IPE (pronounced E-pay) wood decking and galvanized metal grating decking. The tensile shade structures allow visitors to take cover from the rain or the sun, and gangways lead from the winding wood decking out to the floating dock. The two tier pier allows visitors an overhead observation area, as well as a way to get closer to the water via the gangways. Modern lighting elements illuminate the walkways, and the tensile shades. Equally modern benches offer visitors a place to sit out on the structure, or back on shore.
The new pier is also easily accessible from Ship Canal Commons, and is a short bike ride from Wilkeson Pointe along the Industrial Heritage Trail.
