There are food trucks aplenty across the city of Buffalo. There are trucks selling taco, pizzas, Thai food, mac and cheese, and Polish food. In this craze, it was only a matter of time before the trucks specializing in desserts started appearing.
That’s where Danielle Sass and her truck, Sassi Cakes, comes in. Sass runs the main Sassi Cakes location out of Fire Hall in North Tonawanda. It’s something she’s worked on since she was a student at Buffalo State. “I wanted to open a shop of mine,” said Sass, who graduated in 2013. “Food trucks are cheaper and newer and more mobile.”
Most of the flavors of cupcakes she bakes come from different candies she tries. Some include Reese’s Cup, Snickerdoodle, Orange Sponge Candy, Gingerbread, and S’mores. “One of them is based on Girl Scout cookies, from when I was a part of the group,” said Sass.
Most of the events that Sass has catered are birthdays, as well as food truck Thursdays in North Tonawanda and Food Truck Tuesdays in Larkinville. “I drive it, and make everything myself, though I will hire somebody next month.”
Sass and her cupcakes recently won first place the Kiss 98.5 Cupcake challenge and holds the title of best cupcake in WNY. “I was up against 11 other dessert delis,” said Sass, “so I hope that helps with business.”
