After a long successful run (14 years), Morning Glory Café on Porter Avenue has closed its doors. The operators had been talking about retiring for some time, and that time has finally come.
Fortunately, it didn’t take long for a new operator to step up to the plate. After what appears was a flood of interest, the operators of Café 59 have signed a lease on the space. “Originally we were looking for another spot in the Medical Campus,” owner Chris Connolly told me. “Then the Morning Glory location came up. I live close by so it was the perfect place for another location. It’s a lot smaller than what we are used to at 500 square feet, and there is a limited kitchen without an ANSUL system, which means that we will be using our location on Allen Street as a commissary of sorts.”
The food plan at the Café 59 – Prospect Hill location will be more like something that you might see at a Subway restaurant. There will be soups, salads and sandwiches, many of which customers will be able to “build” as they go. There will also be a full espresso and cappuccino bar.
Since the seating is limited, it is expected that there will be a lot of take-out orders. D’Youville College is located across the street, and makes up the crux of the growing neighborhood activity. The restaurant location does come with some green space. The location is close to Kleinhans Music Hall, the Peace Bridge, and is accessible via bike lanes. Café 59 – Prospect Hill is scheduled to open at the end of August.
