Buffalo & Erie County Public Library Staff Review by Carol Ann Strahl
Any music devotee of the 1960’s through 1980 Rock period will relish this behind the scenes look at the world of glam rock and punk. The triumvirate of Iggy Pop, Lou Reed and David Bowie are featured and their interpersonal relationships are explored.
This post-Beatles music world was a triple helix of sexuality, drugs and decadence. Sometimes the music was a side issue. Other groups such as Mott the Hoople, The Stooges, and Todd Rundgren were also part of this world. The specter of Andy Warhol hovered over Bowie, Pop and Reed. As an aside, Bowie was the first to cover Bruce Springsteen’s music.
Mott the Hoople appeared in the Mary Seaton Room at Kleinhans Music Hall in 1973 and, believe it or not, their opening act was Aerosmith. Lou Reed appeared at University at Buffalo in the early 70’s also. Isn’t there always a “Buffalo connection”?
I always quote an axiom concerning the entertainment business – ”It was always a better show backstage.” Upon finishing the book, I think the reader will agree.
