If you know anything about the world of metal type, then you know how hard it can be to procure old collections that are both valuable and still very useful. The WNY Book Arts Center (WNYBAC) recently came across an opportunity to acquire a collection of letter type (over 50 cases of metal type with several fonts in multiple sizes) that would help add to enhance the organization’s community letterpress printshop. Fortunately, the community stepped up to the plate, and the metal type was secured for the organization. The metal type will immediately get put to good use by members, classes, workshops, and studio renters. The collection includes:
• 6 sizes of Goudy Handtooled
• 6 sizes of Kennerley
• 6 sizes of Gallia
• 5 sizes of Neon
• 5 sizes of Civilité
• 9 sizes of Goudy Bold
• 2 sizes of Ad Lib!
• 3 sizes of Dominus
• 3 sizes of Fournier Italic
• 3 sizes of Studio
• 3 sizes of Onyx
• 2 sizes of Agency Gothic
• 18pt Egmont and Egmont Italic
• 3 cases of Ornaments and more!
The Kickstarter goal that WNYBAC reached was $2500 – a sum well worth the metal type that the group would ultimately acquire. In exchange for donating to the cause, hand-printed rewards are being issued to the funders.
Now that the $2500 goal has been exceeded, WNYBAC has an additional to weeks to enhance other aspects of its workshop:
• $3000 gets new rollers for a Vandercook 219
• $4000 gets the Trim-o-Saw refurbished
So let’s get WNYBAC the additional tools that they need to be the best community letterpress printshop around. Click here to see the Kickstarter campaign. And thanks to everyone who has already committed to the cause!
