At this point in time, Hands Across Buffalo is moving full speed ahead. Just this morning I heard that the organizers were zeroing in on their target, with approximately 6000 people signed up for the human chain. That means that they are still looking for a boost of about 1000 people with a little over a week to go until the big day. And that means that your participating is essential in order to complete the chain of people that will physically connect the East and West sides of the city. Click here for more info.
On the day of the event, there will be other celebrations held throughout the city to honor the accomplishment and pay tribute to the cause that recognizes the need to combat poverty, support peace, and embrace diversity. The city-wide celebration of diversity will be in full swing throughout the day, not only joining together to form the human chain, but also to offer “human links” a chance to embrace the different cultures that will be coming together on that day. From Michelle Holler at West Side Bazaar:
Join us on May 17th at the West Side Bazaar located at 25 Grant Street for a celebration of diversity!
The West Side Bazaar will be joining with Devi Bollywood Dance and Salsa for the Soul to hold two workshops for Hands Across Buffalo. Come celebrate diversity in the heart of the West Side. The West Side Bazaar is an international food court and a haven for unique arts and crafts from all around the world.
Hands Across will be an effort to promote racial unity and a community commitment to better understanding race and poverty. It will feature 7,000 people joining hands across the length of Ferry St. from the Niagara River to Bailey Avenue.
From 11:45 am-12:15 pm, Salsa Sarah from Salsa for the Soul will provide an introduction to the history, culture, music and dance of the Latin Caribbean. Come learn some basic salsa steps and get a sneak peek at Latin rhythm and culture!
From 12:30 to 1:00pm., artistic director Gaitrie of Devi Bollywood Dance and her team will be giving an interactive demonstration and brief performance.
The West Side Bazaar is a daily dose of diversity on the city’s West Side. The bazaar strives to introduce people to the different cultures that comprise our city. Please join us as we honor this inspirational event that will stand as a symbol for all that we have achieved as a city.
