There’s an international movement called “Kidical Mass” that is geared towards getting kids out riding on bikes. This year, Buffalo is joining the movement by hosting a Kidical Mass event this coming Sunday, May 18, 2104. The event is designed to get families out riding, and by doing so, the thought is that young people will learn the importance of exercise while enjoying being outdoors. It’s also a great family bonding exercise, and a great way to meet other families in the community. If enough families participate in the event, then Buffalo will reach a true “Kidical Mass”.
“The original Kidical Mass ride was in 2008 in Eugene, OR (see original website),” event organizer Jesse Smith told me. “I had read about it a couple of years ago and thought about trying to organize something here, but never really acted upon the idea. Last year, I created a Facebook group called Buffalo Family Bicycling, with the idea of creating an online place for Buffalo families to connect and exchange ideas about riding bikes with their kids. Through that group, I met Stacy Bisker (Buffalo Rising ran an article about her family – see here), who had a previously organized Kidical Mass rides in her former town of Huntington, WV. That was the impetus to turn an idle idea into reality, and Stacy has been helping me plan and organize this ride. I am hoping to make it a monthly or bi-monthly event during the nicer weather.”
On Sunday, families will meet at the Rose Garden playground at Delaware Park (along Lincoln Parkway). Kids of all ages are welcome, as are any kind of bike they would like to ride, including trailers, trail-a-bikes, longtails, Long Johns, tandems, folders, trikes, etc. Kids at heart are also welcome to join in on the fun!
