If you have a son or daughter who is interested in the arts, and would ultimately like to pursue a career in the field, then there are ways to foster that dream. Locally, Buffalo Arts Studio offers a Jump Start Mentorship Program that helps to prepare Buffalo youth so that they may find a stepping stone on their journey to college.
By immersing the students into the local world of arts, the youth are allowed to explore different artistic directions, and prepare their portfolios, which is key to moving ahead. The program is meant to empower these future artists for the competitive collegiate environment to come. The Jump Start Mentorship Program is also integral in that it provides the essential building blocks to those who will ultimately become full-fledged artists on their own.
“The program is a huge resource for youth in the Buffalo area,” said Laura Struble, a proponent of the program. “A few years ago, my daughter decided she wanted to go to college for animation. I knew she needed to strengthen her skills – to build a portfolio strong enough for college acceptance. I stumbled upon the Jump Start Program. My daughter met with Jayne Hughes, the director. Jayne reviewed her portfolio and gave a critique. After that, my daughter spent the next few years participating in the mentorship program. She took very high quality art classes, went on field trips and met working artists. Jump Start even secured scholarships for the youth, from The Allentown Village Society for a month-long summer art camp at SUNY Fredonia. My daughter is graduating this June and is off to college in a world renowned animation program. She was accepted to every college she applied to and was even awarded scholarships thanks to the preparation and experience that she earned while in the program.”
