As we are mostly all aware, the Monarch butterfly is going through may of the same disturbing challenges that many species are currently facing. As the use of farm pesticides continues to be unregulated, and sprawl depletes our meadows and forests, the Monarch is finding it hard to find the food sources that it needs to make the long journeys along its migratory route.
With the help of resources such as The Botanical Gardens, we are able to learn the plight of these majestic creatures. On June 8, 2014, the community is invited to attend Monarch Madness, an event that will help us to understand just how important the Monarchs are, and what a loss it is that we are seeing their numbers depleting s rapidly.
Along with butterfly and pollinator activities, guests will be able to walk through a butterfly enclosure provided by East Monarch Butterfly Farm in Clarence, NY. It’s a chance to get up and close with the butterflies, while learning about their habits and their habitats. This is a new event for The Botanical Gardens. Can you imagine if this was the precursor to creating a permanent butterfly conservatory? Just like the one in Niagara Falls! It would be an incredible addition to the gardens, that would go hand in hand with the current displays. Wishful thinking? Maybe, but you never know.
