The Winter Market at the Horsefeathers building on Connecticut Street will be wrapping up on May 3. At that time, many of the market sellers will be heading off to various outdoor farmers’ markets throughout the region (including a goon number heading to Bidwell).
Now normally the market at Horsefeathers would disappear, only to reappear in the fall. This year that formula will change. Seeing that many sellers can’t get into the various overbooked outdoor markets, there is an effort underway to create a permanent, year round market at the Horsefeathers building, capitalizing on the already permanent market stalls located inside (Pasta Peddler, Blackbird Sweets, Chow Chocolat, Jolie’s Chinese).
The idea came from Martin Danilowicz, owner of Martin Cooks Restaurant (the anchor tenant in the building), who felt that the buzz of the market would be missed come Saturday, May 10, 2014. “Why not create an indoor/outdoor market with flowers, and foods and sundries similar to what you see in other urban markets,” he told me. “There are plenty of established sellers who are displaced from Saturday markets during the summertime, and new sellers who want to get in on the action. We have an established market setting here, with hundreds of people who arrive each and every Saturday looking for the best food offerings that Buffalo has to offer. And as Connecticut Street continues to grow, we want the market to grow along with it.”

Aside from the market plans, Martin Cooks is celebrating its one year anniversary currently. The added momentum of the market will help to fuel what has already become a West Side staple in the restaurant industry. In order to keep things fresh and current, Martin Cooks is evolving as any good eatery should. “On Wednesday evenings we are introducing “Uncorked & Unseated” – a wine series from 5:30pm -8:00pm,” said Martin. “Every Wednesday we have a different guest wine rep who shares his or her passion for wine (five different wine tastings), while we offer a generous selection of scrumptious small plates that you simply help yourself to while mingling with new and old friends ($40 plus gratuity).
“We are also very excited about our new Tapas Bar – tapas is simply different small plates of food, finger foods… appetizers from throughout the world. The Tapas Bar (seen in the lead image) is open Thursday – Saturday from 6pm onwards, no reservations necessary.
“Also, our Take Home department is changing with the seasons. Starting next week we will be offering delicious whole roasted chickens, several choices of seasonal vegetables and sides. Fresh baguettes, green salad, cheese and salami. The perfect dinner to take home, take to a party or the ultimate picnic basket. Available Thursday through Saturday from 10am to 10pm.
“Finally, with the arrival of spring, we are introducing “Spring Into The New You” – healthy weekly meal plans that offer a choice of breakfast, lunch and dinner that can be delivered to your doorstep or picked up. Plans to be discussed individually and in person.”
Be it the summer market, the restaurant, the neighborhood, or the general upward spiral of the entire West Side, there are plenty of inspirational creations brewing, brought to you by an eclectic mix of businesses, aiming to make a seismic splash in Buffalo.
