A streetscape and infrastructure project on one of the Fruit Belt’s primary east-west streets is well underway. David Torke reminded us of this project that was announced last year.
$2.2 million in public funding is being spent on the redevelopment of Carlton Street, from Michigan Avenue to Jefferson Avenue. In addition, the city allocated $700,000 in Community Development Block Grant Funds, plus another $300,000 in City bond funds, to resurface roads and install new sidewalks on the side streets that intersect Carlton.
The Carlton Street work includes: road repairs, sidewalk and curb replacement, installation of ADA-compliant ramps, replacement of driveway aprons, the installation of new decorative lighting with LED fixtures, as well as landscape enhancements including small median islands. A new water main will also be installed down Carlton. Green infrastructure, such as pervious pavement and a bio-infiltration area, have been added to the project to divert some of the rain runoff from the combined sewer system in the area.
The plans call for the preservation of several old growth trees along the south side of the street.
