For years I have been posting about the need for more water features in Buffalo. Water can add a stimulating effect to an otherwise uninteresting community center. People tend to be attracted to the calming and playful nature of water features. In a part of the city, such as Canalside, where the canal terminus is the main attraction, it’s important to create places inland where people can interact with water.
Yesterday, I came across an image of a new water feature at the East Canal at the Donovan Block (located near the corner of Scott and Washington Streets) that contractor Mark Cerrone, Inc. recently installed and tested the amenity. “The fountain is 18 inches deep and is made to look like it connects to the Buffalo River though a series of canals and bridges,” said Jessica A. Zelman, Operations and Development of Mark Cerrone, Inc. “There are light features, six cascading nozzles, and it is all granite. It is meant to offer an eye-catching aesthetic to attract locals and tourists to the waterfront. The plans call for shops and restaurants to run between the fountain and Scott Street. We were the General Contractor on this job – Libby Broderick was the Project Manager and Kevin Campbell was the Superintendent. This new fountain, the renovation of the Donovan Building, the new Harbor Center (hockey haven), and the Harbor Front (concert series) are all great improvements that are already attracting attention far and wide.
