Dance, being a form of language, is meant to communicate with us expressionist messages by use of soulful energy, body movements, and emotional signals. When it comes to semi-improvisational dance, there is a connection between the artists and the audience where the dancers literally feed off of the energy of the viewers.
Every thing is wonder us is a full evening featuring a showing of both dance and music – an intimate exchange between choreographer April Biggs and composer Clinton Haycraft.
As the dancers “converse” with the audience, there is another extraordinary conversation at hand that is often taken for granted, and in some cases can be too rigid and rehearsed. Leaving room for a free-flowing dynamic artistic dialogue, Biggs and Haycraft have left the doors open for creative expression and intuitive creation. “Being inside (as a performer) and outside (as a choreographer) of a piece that explores intimacy is akin to a hall of mirrors,” says Biggs. “Intimacy becomes the hyper-focused lens and its existence or lack thereof is palpable everywhere. This is usually the way of the artist, experiencing the making of one’s art even when not intending to be. Yet the immersion into the context of intimacy is like being always aware of how inevitably porous, and therefore vulnerable, we truly are. And it has been months of seeing in others and myself, no matter how close we are, that there are spaces within each other that we will never touch or know.”
