Ukrainian food is perfect for cold weather with its savory earthiness. If you have not become truly intimate with beets, cabbages, onions and potatoes, the time to do so approaches.
On Friday, February 14 head down to the Ukrainian Club, also known as the Ukrainian-American Civic Center, for a ritual of late winter in Buffalo: Pierogi Love Night. Come eat the dumplings that are the street foods of Ukraine and other countries of Eastern Europe.
Proceeds raised from this year’s event will support the Euromaidan movement in Ukraine now in its third month.
After years of corruption, the Euromaidan movement refers to the ongoing demonstrations across Ukraine demanding an end to widespread government corruption, abuse of power, and violation of human rights in Ukraine.
Experience authentic Ukrainian cuisine from 6 until 11 pm, prepared by the club’s resident chef.
Live music starts at 9 pm, featuring:
David Kane
Bill Nehill
Jack Topht
UVB-76
Igor Stonehorn
DJ MJB
The club, located in Buffalo’s historic Black Rock neighborhood has a full-service bar featuring an array of Ukrainian and European beer and liquor. As if that wasn’t enough, you can pose for obligatory photos with patriotic symbols, by artists Lukia Costello and Michael W. Thomas.
The Ukrainian-American Civic Center is the considered the oldest Ukrainian ethnic social club in Buffalo, incorporated in the 1930’s. It originally served the social welfare needs of immigrant families who were part of the “great wave” of immigration to Buffalo at the turn-of-the-twentieth century. Today, it’s estimated that about 10,000 people of Ukrainian descent live in Western New York.
Admission is $5 suggested donation, with all proceeds to benefit the Euromaidan movement in Ukraine.
No credit cards. Family-friendly, but bar open to 21+ only with required ID. Free parking is available in the lot at Grote Street and Military Road.
