Those of you that know Curry’s Restaurant & Pub on Kenmore Ave know how beloved this little spot is. It is both the local tavern where everybody knows your name and an old friend’s dining room. Curry’s offers a place to watch a game, grab a drink with pals and/or have a home cooked meal that could rival anyone’s mom.
My sister and her family have been regulars at Curry’s for years, so upon our relocating back in Buffalo, we jumped in on the action. The friendly servers greet you upon arrival and most times the owner, Shannon Rhonemus is there to say hello. Don’t be mistaken; Curry’s does not serve any type of curry. It boasts a classic, down home American menu. Pat Curry started the restaurant in 1994, Shannon began working there in 2003 and then she purchased the restaurant from Pat in 2013. They have lunch and dinner hours during the week and then they are open on Sunday for dinner in the winter months.
Curry’s menu is somewhat driven by the stuffed banana peppers… a true Buffalo favorite. One of my personal favorites is their signature dish, The Dibble. Basically it is a classic pub sandwich of either grilled steak, chicken, meatballs or even fried bologna but perfected with a topper of a cheese stuffed hot banana pepper. They also offer the spicy, stuffed morsels on top of grilled chicken or as a classic appetizer with toast.
Weeknight specials include pot roast, chicken à la king, meatloaf and prime rib. The popular turkey dinner special on Wednesday night packs the house, so be sure to go early. Curry’s weekly Thanksgiving offers a first course greens salad, fresh roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberries & vegetables. The only thing missing is the couch to rest on afterward.
Curry’s also has the usual pub suspects like chicken wings, quesadillas, potato skins and burgers. All are quite good and round out the menu to offer a little something delicious for everyone. My husband says the wings are as good as any around town, if not the best!
They also have one of the best fish fry dinners, which is offered every night of the week. As Shannon states, “Our top seller is the fish fry. Buffalo is known for the fish fry and I truly believe that Curry’s has perfected it. The dinner includes a beer battered haddock (breaded and broiled also available) coleslaw, macaroni salad, and choice of potato (we make our own homemade German potato salad for Fridays only).” It is a giant plate of love!
If you long for a place with some down home eats and friendly service, Curry’s is a place to add to your dining rotation. Stop in and say “hi” to Shannon & the gang.
