Buffalo & Erie County Public Library Staff Review by Carol Ann Strahl:
Any devotee of rock music will literally eat up this compendium of rock, folk and blues memories. The author was a member of numerous bands including Blood, Sweat & Tears and The Blues Project. Starting in the 50’s and extending through the 90’s, he regales the reader with stories featuring the elite stars of American pop music during this 40-year span—Hendrix, Berry, the Stones, the Beatles, Dylan, Clapton, and others. Being in a band is being in a “family” – are you friends or are you together for the music? In the latter part of his career, Kooper taught a course at Berklee College of Music in Boston and scored music for a TV crime series.
There’s also a Buffalo connection. (Isn’t there always?) Buffalo native Andy Kulberg, whose only previous experience was playing bassist with a few polka bands around Buffalo, ended up playing in The Blues Project with the author. Kulberg was an electric FLAUTIST of note—certainly an interesting juxtaposition of music types.
Using the lexicon of the 60’s, this memoir is a “good trip.”
