From floating bat clouds to industrial bee hives, Buffalo has been building some rather unusual and creative homes for insects and animals. Now, the Buffalo/WNY Chapter of American Institute of Architects (Emerging Professionals Committee) is tasking Buffalo architects, builders and designers to imagine contemporary domiciles for the domestic animals of their choosing as part of a benefit for Buffalo Humane. “It’s an ideas-based competition in which entrants are asked to design a ‘house’ for a domestic animal of their choice,” said Michael LaValley Associate AIA, LEED AP and co-founder of Buffalo Emerging professionals. “The program’s intent is for each participant to develop a contemporary shelter design addressing spatial requirements of non-human species in a fresh and appealing way. The 2014 Animal House Competition is meant to provide a vehicle for Emerging Professionals across New York State to develop their voices in a unique and challenging design endeavor.”
We’ve seen what some of this city’s imaginative designers have come up with in recent years, which leads me to believe that there are going to be some far out submissions for this design contest. When the time comes, we will be featuring some of the best designs entered into the competition.
