We pay so much attention to moustaches these days, and their ability to raise money for good causes, that we tend to forget about the power of the beard. Well, for a change, the beard is about to take center stage (along with the moustache) in an inaugural event that will bring people together to celebrate the mightiest beards (and moustaches) in Buffalo. And there are many! Some beards sport rubber bands, while others even have beads that add some colorful bling. I’m a fan of tuts, but have never ventured down that road myself. When it comes to beards, Buffalonian Johny Chow could teach us a thing or two. And while beards are normally the lesser featured entrants in these sorts of competitions, it is because of the ‘shear’ staying power of the moustache that they reign supreme, often overshadowing their chin-gripping counterpart. That’s all about to change, however.
On Tuesday November 26, growers and fans of the beard and the stache are invited to show off their bounty at the Buffalo Beard and Moustache Competition where the best men will come away with awards for their efforts. “This is the first year on what we hope will become an annual event coinciding with No Shave November,” said Sean Lafferty from www.celebratebuffalo.com. “A portion of the proceeds will go to Locks of Love. I started it this year because it was something Buffalo has really been lacking on a bigger scale. From the film, Mansome, and the television series Whisker Wars, there has been this slow transition from more of an underground thing, to it becoming something accepted in all walks of life. People are always growing them bigger and badder, and there has even been a social club founded around the concept here in Buffalo known as the Beards & Beers Social Club (see Facebook), where beardies and beard lovers can come together. The event is being hosted by Steve K. from 103.3 The Edge’s Underground Show (a long bearded man himself) along with a host of judges such as Lydia Dominick (Channel 2 Sports Extra), Johny Chow (Fireball Ministry, Stone Sour), and Jon Mirro (H.O.D. Tattoo). The Kitchen at Waiting Room will have food available all night long, with drink specials, cash prizes, and t-shirts that can be purchased for $10. Tickets are $10 and includes admission and competition entry if you choose to do so. There are also two creative categories so the beardless and ladies can compete as well. A great event for a great cause! Live music from Well Worn Boot.”
