Two city schools are celebrating the completion of multi-million dollar renovations. Ribbon cuttings were held at School #18, at 750 West Avenue, on the city’s west side, and School #61, at 453 Leroy Avenue, on the city’s east side.
As part of Phase V of the five-phase, $1.4 billion Joint Schools Reconstruction project, Dr. Antonia Pantoja School of Academic Excellence received meticulous reconstruction with preservation of historic details and overall efficiency in mind. The reconstruction includes new floors, ceilings, lights and doors, along with glass block windows in the cafeteria, providing a high level of natural light to complement the bright colors therein. The reconfigured interior results in a more organized use of space and sequencing of grade levels and support services.
Amenities include a refurbished gym floor, new home & careers, science, art and technology rooms, a refurbished auditorium, a library with a new computer lab, and a new play area. All classrooms are now outfitted with interactive smart boards. Exterior feature lighting in the new canopy and refurbishment of the historic entrance canopies and lighting, make the school a neighborhood anchor with a strong community presence.
Originally constructed in constructed in 1939 is the only existing school building in the District designed in the Art Moderne Style. The reconstruction was begun in August of 2011. School #18 holds 464 students from Pre-K to 8th grade.
The Early Childhood Center #61 received reconstruction with historic preservation and new technology in mind. Many elements of historic significance were preserved, such as the ornamental tin ceilings and crown detailing, along with plaques and friezes of the c. 1904 school.
The $10.5 reconstruction includes repaired transoms over classroom doors, new appropriately-sized lockers for students, a new kitchen and cafeteria, a new computer lab, and a renovated gymnasium, auditorium and library, complete with new furniture. A new egress stairway addition now serves the auditorium and gymnasium, and new elevators and exterior ramps make the entire building accessible to individuals in wheelchairs.
Amenities also include interactive smart boards in all classrooms, and a newly constructed and age-appropriate playground. Exterior improvements include new lighting, new landscaping, and exterior masonry refurbishment. Originally constructed in 1904, the building underwent major additions in 1922. The school serves 295 students from Pre-K to 4.
