It’s getting to be that time of year again… one of the only times of year that we can break out of our own shell and become a character that we all secretly wish to be. Halloween allows us to don full costumed attire, while not being looked at in a strange way (well, depending on what you’re wearing I suppose). And let’s not forget, it’s not just Halloween that we have the chance to do this. We also have the World’s Largest Disco, masquerade parties (The Witches Ball is coming up), theater and film productions. Fall and winter is a great time for those who love a good costume party. Fortunately, for those of us who don’t have our own hidden wardrobe filled with clothing for secret identities, there is a place in Downtown Buffalo where you can find all sorts of role play attire and accessories, perfect for any sort of costume function that you have planned. The one-stop-shop that I am referring to it DC Theatricks of course!
Located in the Theatre District since 1981 (the original location was across the street from its present site, where it first settled into during the late 1990’s). This place has just about everything imaginable, and the staff is fun, creative and knows the origins of each costume and the character that should be represented while wearing it (an added bonus, as these are some sometimes elaborate get-ups).
This past Saturday afternoon, some friends of mine and I got together for a photo shoot with local photographer Kajuan Lyons and went all out to show some of the outfits available at DC Theatricks. Our strange outfits appeared to have stopped traffic at times, as drivers tried to see what was going on and passersby gawked at all the commotion. When it came time for the matinees to let out, some of the theater goers wanted to have their pictures taken with us, which made the production even more fun!
While this was taking place, owner of DC Theatricks, Dave DeJac noticed the reaction and excitement from the visitors in the Theater District, many of whom were out-of-towners, all surprised and amazed to see such a sight. So, to continue the momentum, this coming Saturday, October 19, be on the look out for a few characters roaming the Theatre District in full costumed attire, provided by DC Theatricks once again. This may be a start to transforming the district in a very unique way, and might ultimately make downtown even more exciting for all to enjoy… with actors in character, strolling out and about in period attire (and even out of context depending on Dave’s mood).
Where else could all of this take place so effortlessly? Buffalo’s Theatre District of course!
