As the warm weather cools off, there’s one food cart in particular that has no intentions of slowing down. The Gelato Gypsy continues to make her rounds throughout the city, setting up shop side by side with all of the popular food trucks, while at the same time creating a niche of her own at events such as last evening’s Party for The Parks. Gelato Gypsy owner, Amy DiSarno, had quite the busy summer peddling her goods via a beautiful custom cart that was made in Sicily.
Now, as the leaves begin to change, the only thing that Amy intends to switch up might be the flavors of her gelato. “But when it gets really cold,” she told me. “I’m heading inside to The Broadway Market where I will continue to sell gelato part time. Then, next summer I’ll be back out setting up at events, weddings, and maybe even at Delaware Park.”
Seeing the Gelato Gypsy last night, set up outside the old boathouse/casino, serving up authentic Italian gelato to a slew of thankful (and even a bit surprised) customers was remarkable. This type of operation fits perfectly in our parks, along the waterfront, and anywhere else where people gravitate to. If all goes well, in the future we will see more of Amy and her cart(s), and just as the food trucks have made a name for themselves, hopefully the era of specialty food carts has just begun.
