The mere look of the new RiverRocktoberfest poster is enough to get me excited to attend a new Oktoberfest in the city. The one that I’m referring to is scheduled to take place on and around Amherst Street and will draw heavily upon residents from Black Rock and Riverside, although everyone is welcome to attend. Activities scheduled for Saturday, September 28 (5pm-11pm) include “a traditional keg tapping*, a dozen unique venues, Oom Pa Pa orchestras, German bands, German food, German libations, fair haired frauleins and leiderhosen clad lads.” There will also be a free shuttle system to get revelers from one place to the next safely.
Seeing that Amherst Street is a very walkable neighborhood, featuring plenty of bars and restaurants to pop into, this is a natural place to host an Oktoberfest. There’s also a diverse set of venues that are participating, which should make for a fun romp on the town. The event will sound off with an official Munich-inspired keg tapping, upon which time the various neighborhood venues will kick it into high-bräu gear. I can see this event growing quickly over the years, and as more businesses open on Amherst Street, these are the types of productions that will rally the community around the commercial district.
I’m counting eight live German bands, German food galore, dancing, beer tastings… get ready for what looks to be an ethnic celebration of epic proportions.
*Horse drawn procession and Keg Tapping at 5pm from Polish Cadets (927 Grant Street) to American Legion Post #1041 (533 Amherst Street). Free continual shuttle service from 6pm-12midnight.
