In Buffalo (or anywhere else for that matter) there are not many shops that come to mind that sell a mix of merchandise ranging from a one-off 80s vintage motorcycle jacket (scooped up in Italy) to hand-strung necklaces made with fresh water pearls the size of gum balls. It’s even rarer to come across a boutique that also features a healthy cross-section of lace and bling, set in a storefront with vaulting tin ceilings and crystal chandeliers, where a Hello Kitty handbag can rub elbows with authentic Ferragamo, Chanel and Prada boots, handbags, belts, hats, suits and skirts. From simple flats to funky platforms to outrageous thigh highs, Karl has taken refined classics and incorporated the perfect amount of edginess that appeals to both the school girl vamp and the decked out damsel. Simply stated: Karl is one of a kind.
Karl’s proprietor, who goes by the name of Karl, got his start in the fashion industry in NYC, where he collected sought after items from fashion shoots, sample sales and the flea market on 25th for years. Part image consultant, part hair stylist (coming soon), and part jewelry designer, Karl is the guy that can bedazzle even the toughest client. “If you’re looking for someone with strong opinions, then you’ve found him,” Karl told me. “I’ll give you straight forward advice if you want it. I’ve spent years collecting the clothing and accessories that you see here, and I’m incorporating new lines as well. You will find things here that you won’t find anywhere else.
“This store has been in the making for quite some time. I’m proud of it and I’m proud of the street. That’s why you will see me out front each morning weeping the sidewalk and the street. When I was young my mother would take me to Grant Street and I was always impressed by the shop owners that were constantly sweeping outside… that gesture said a lot about the people who took pride in their neighborhood. I believe that the outside of your business is a reflection of what can be found on the inside.”
Karl is now officially open at 822 Elmwood Avenue | Buffalo NY | 716-228-3335
