Joe’s Deli opened on Elmwood Avenue yesterday, and with it came a flood of people through the front doors to see the remarkable makeover that has transpired both inside and out. From the new paint colors to the two garage doors that roll up, creating an indoor/outdoor oasis, Joe’s Deli has certainly stepped it up.
While not all of the windows open garage-style, the skylight in the middle of the main dining room provides added natural light to the interior, making sitting inside the restaurant as enjoyable as sitting on the patio. The ceiling fans will go a long way during the warm summer months, but the natural breeze that flows through the place is the key.
Upwards of 40 seats in the main dining area go far enough to create a cozy seating arrangement without feeling constrained. Even with a fairly packed house, the quick food delivery is remarkable, along with friendly service from an attentive wait staff.
In true Joe’s fashion the lunch selections are virtually limitless, once you consider all of the add-ons and the ‘build-your-own’ options. Anyone who has eaten at Joe’s knows that the food quality is top-notch – from the ample portions to the fresh bread to the quality deli meats, there’s a reason that owner Joe Lyons’ recipe for success is working. Even the music is enjoyable (Killers, Band of Horses, etc). In fact, the only disappointment of my lunch trip to the deli today was the selection of soda - Stewart’s over Johnnie Ryan (a regional fan favorite).
Make a plan to visit this new Elmwood destination and choose between sitting in the barroom, at the bar, out on the main floor or on the patio. Wherever you end up stationed, there is not a bad seat in the house. Back in the day, sitting on the patio always felt isolated from the rest of the restaurant and vice versa. These days there’s a flow to the set-up… while sitting inside by the open garage-style window I actually had a conversation with a couple of people seated down below. My meal was great. The atmosphere was enjoyable. And the energy of the place is already palpable. Even the $10 price tag for lunch was a bonus. Plus, the place is open seven days a week!
There has been a lot of anticipation for Joe’s to open on Elmwood, which is why the first few days will be super busy for the establishment. But Joe has done it once before and he’s about to do it again… on a part of Elmwood that could use an infusion of life, vitality and great deli food selections.
