Main Street in the Theater District is a bit messy these days. But by early fall, cars will be sharing the 600 block of Main Street between Chippewa and Tupper streets with light rail vehicles. The work extends the streetscape work that has already been completed on the 700 block of Main Street. Mark Cerrone, Inc. is the contractor for the $8 million project.
600 Block plans include the installation of bike lanes, 45 parking spaces, five loading zones and 49 street trees and 22 planters. New light poles, street furniture, and wayfinding and architectural interpretive signage will also be installed as part of the project. The Theater District light rail stations were removed earlier this year.
A Plaza of Stars will be constructed at the northern end of the light rail portal at Main and Tupper streets. It will be the new site for Buffalo’s Theatre Walk of Fame and provide a visual gateway to the Theater District.
Work is expected to begin this year on the $20 million next phase of the re-traffic project stretching between Mohawk and Chippewa streets.
