By Suzanne Jaszcz:
In addition to all the local film projects that are bouncing around the city as of late, I was recently approached by a local filmmaker asking me if I could promote his web series. The show is titled By the Book and they are getting ready to film their second season of episodes.
The brainchild of director Jim Renzi it was inspired by his favorite genres of TV shows and movies combining police/crime dramas like The Wire, with slacker comedies such as Office Space – all rolled into one show.
What started as a creative way to pass the time while he was unemployed has now turned into a serious passion. The show follows a group of
slacker detectives that recently took down a major crime lord by the name of Big Sal.
Season two will see the team attempt to bring down Sal’s boss – a man by the name of Jarvek Gruber. According to Jim, there will be opportunities for the local community to get involved with this project on several levels
stating, “…we will have at least one more female lead role to film, as well as a need for extras. We would also like to include music from local bands, and we will need some graphic artwork done.”
The series currently has a fundraising campaign going on via Indiegogo and all donations made will go to help pay for the costumes, props, graphic design and transportation. There will also be different giveaways to those that donate at specific monetary levels. They plan on filming the series in Buffalo and the surrounding area and have secured a number of private apartments but are still in need of a restaurant/bar, art gallery and warehouse space. Jim asks if there are any business owners that are willing to let them film at their locations to please contact him at jim@bythebookseries.com.
