There are a couple of good reasons that you are going to want to catch this space age furniture and accessories show. First off, the highly sought after items that are to be displayed together is a once in a lifetime opportunity to view. Second, the venue for the show is the new warehouse gallery on Chandler Street off Military, now known as CooCooU@27 located in historic Black Rock.. It certainly doesn’t get any better than this, for anyone who is interested in the modern design period ranging from 1957-1972.
On Friday April 12, 2013 starting at 6:30pm, a Gala Opening will be held at the warehouse, and not only will guests be treated to some of the coolest and hottest retro designs and fashion statements, the earth shaking event will also feature “spacey electronic grooves, cosmic projections, moon shot mixtures, orbiting edibles, and earthlings modeling far out fashions.”
Opening night is being designed to pay tribute to innovative designers of the era, along with the radical period of time that promoted the advancement of space exploration. The event will also be pay homage to the memory of Yuri Gargarin’s first manned spaceflight on April 12, 1961 (see Yuri’s Night).
The Future is History exhibit has been created and designed by Martin McGee and is a major extension of a multimedia presentation he gave at the 2004 Hallwalls member’s show, The World of tomorrow…Today!
Travel back in time and visit the byproducts of the Space Race – a time of both uncertainty and untold promise. Ponder the Jetsonian furniture, lighting, apparel, films, posters, architectural models & renderings, consumer electronics, Space Race memorabilia, housewares, advertisements, book and record covers, decorative objects, and space themed toys & games… much of which has been amassed by McGee and fellow mid-century modern collectors.
Some of the world’s top designers will be brought back to life through viewings of their rare and lovingly preserved artifacts. Collectors and gawkers will be undone with the Atomic Age throwbacks, many of which can only be found (for the most part) while leafing through retro style magazines.
The Future is History exhibit is divided into three principal stages;
BLAST OFF! 1957-1962 Ascent of the Science Agenda
IN ORBIT 1963-1968 Predominance of Pop in a Mod Mod World
EARTH WISE 1969-1972 The Cacophonous Climax
Come view them all, and discover for yourself how your everyday life has been influenced by our voyages into space. From the music that we listen to, to the art galleries that we visit… fashion and furniture, gadgets and cars… you can’t escape the impact that these rare vintage artifacts have had on our lives. To rediscover the Space Age in a setting such as this, is an even rarer opportunity.
“From the Topless Swimsuit to Acid Rock. From Andy Warhol to Buckminster Fuller and David Bowie to Stanley Kubrick. From Sun Ra to Timothy Leary and Stewart Brand to Jane Fonda.” – The Future is History
