Now that the first unofficial welcoming of Spring has come and gone, it’s about time to gear up for our region’s more official vernal celebration.
The eleventh annual Boom Days, sponsored by Rigidized Metals, is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 6th from 2pm-10pm; and for the second year in a row, it will be held at the historic grain elevators – more specifically, at Silo City.
Boom Days is an eclectic celebration of our distinct locale as well as who we are as Western New Yorkers. While toasting the culmination of another winter season, and ceremoniously lifting the ice boom out of the mouth of the Niagara River, this event serves as a true ode to this beautiful city that we all are fortunate enough to call home.
There could not be a more perfect opportunity to show off our industrial heritage than by hosting a springtime celebratory fête at the Grain Elevators. Located in the heart of the Childs Street Grain Elevator complex, the Perot Elevators and Malt House will be the base of the festival, housing live musical performances by Electric Church, Steel Keys and Brass, Terry Sullivan’s Low Lamp Sessions with David Kane and Don Farmer, and Randle and the Late Night Scandals. There will be beer for sale, provided by Certo Brothers and Flying Bison, with wine and other refreshments available as well. Lloyd’s Taco Truck, R and R BBQ, Rolling Joe’s, and Black Market Food Truck will also be on site, serving up an array of late lunch and dinner items starting at 3pm.
Additionally, there will be a slew of organizations on hand including: Heritage Discovery Center, Lower Lake Maritime Museum, Scholastic Rowing Club, Maritime Center, BYP, Preservation Buffalo/Niagara, Silo City Rocks, Buffalo Scholastic Rowing Association and Waterfront Memories all ready to inform, educate, and inspire. The Edward M. Cotter fireboat will be docked on site and will be open for tours; with a portion of the event proceeds benefitting the world’s oldest operating fireboat.
Finally, Preservation Buffalo/Niagara will be guiding site tours, and there will be blacksmith demonstrations, as well as a rock-climbing exhibition. Horse-drawn wagon rides and a shadow dance performance by Dance WNY round out the entertainment offerings. With the music rocking the elevators until 9pm, culminating in a fantastic firework display, there will be no shortage of fantastic finales – a fitting ending to what is sure to be one unforgettable day!
