First of all, I think that it would be appropriate to acknowledge that Buffalo has got a significant group of aerial dancers who practice and perform these days. That’s pretty cool considering that the relatively obscure recreation of aerial dancing is finally growing in popularity, both with performers and audiences. Remember ten years ago when belly dancing was just coming onto the scene, and everyone thought that it was a passing fad? Well, from seeing what it taking place in other cites, mostly on the West Coast, aerial dancing has just started to climb the ladder as far as a main stream activity, much the same way belly dancing began climbing a similar ladder ten years ago. An aerial dance group known as Buffalo Aerial Dance (B.A.D.) is currently in residence at the Alt Theatre and has been appearing at various public events around the area. The group states that its goal is “to investigate the relationship between floor and ceiling.” That said, B.A.D. invites you to come out tonight and/or tomorrow night to witness a performance called “dark” Valentine – “an evening of original aerial dance and music works created to elicit deliciously surreal excitement and an emotional ride wrapped in the cloak of a “dark” Valentine.”

B.A.D hearts 2/8 and 2/9 will feature solo, duet, and group performances on aerial silks as well as grounded modern dance. Original compositions and orchestrations by H. John Fitzgibbon, as well as musique concrète collaborations between Fitzgibbon, Amy Taravella, and Erica Cope will help form the eclectic audio component of the evening. The Buffalo classic / punk / art / pop band The Moves will assist in the live performance of these works.
